MISHAWAKA, Ind. – It may have taken 47 minutes to penetrate Bethel's nets, but once Grace's women's soccer team scored on Wednesday, the goals kept coming.
The Lady Lancers netted five goals after halftime en route to a 5-1 dismantling of the Lady Pilots. Grace (7-4; 4-0 CL) maintained an undefeated record in Crossroads League competition with Wednesday's road victory.
"This was a good building performance from the women tonight. Our defense was strong all night. We were not firing in the first half, however, we still had good enough opportunities to finish," said head coach Michael Voss. "In the second half they really got it going. It was more on-task with with our capabilities."
Grace unloaded 17 shots in the first half, including two shots that hit the goalposts, but they were unable to convert on their chances.
Carianne Sobey broke open the deadlock after halftime with an unassisted goal at the 47:46 mark.
The Lady Pilots (3-7-2; 0-4 CL) countered to tie the game in the 66th minute, but Grace responded with a fury with four unanswered goals.
Emily Hickerson put Grace on top for good with a blast three minutes after Bethel's goal. Holly Bennett played a through ball to Hickerson, whose shot beat the goalkeeper.
Holly Bennett doubled Grace's lead with a finish at the 77:54 mark. Hickerson's shot drilled off the crossbar, and Mallory Rondeau laid off a ball to Bennett for a clean finish.
Meredith Hollar put the finishing touches on Grace's fine performance with two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Sobey and Bennett earned assists on Hollar's goals as she scored her sixth goal in four games.
As a team Grace held a dominant 27-4 advantage in shots. The Lady Lancers had 18 shots on goal, forcing Bethel's goalkeeper into 12 saves.
Hollar, the reigning Crossroads League Offensive Player of the Week, outshot Bethel's team with 10 shots of her own. Hickerson added five shots, and goalkeeper Carmen Barnhill surrendered just one goal in 90 minutes to get the win.
Grace has now outscored its league competition 17-2 after four matches.
The Lady Lancers face a stiff test in their next match as they travel to rival Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m.
