Baseball drops a pair to Clearwater Christian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Two explosive innings for Grace were not enough to propel the Lancers' baseball squad over Clearwater Christian in a doubleheader.

The Lancers lost 8-4 in the opener before falling 13-12 in the final inning of the second game.

Clearwater Christian jumped out to a fast 5-0 lead after three innings were complete. But Grace rallied with four runs in the fourth inning. Paul Blankley doubled in Jared Lemler to spark the rally, and CJ Swartz and Jacob Bloom singled in runs for Grace as well.

The home team responded with a run in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth for the final four-run margin of victory. Blankley and Wyatt Clemens notched two hits apiece to lead Grace offensively. Sammy Wilkerson pitched a scoreless inning in relief, and Logan Grigsby struck out two batters in another inning of relief.

Three of Grace's eight runs surrendered were unearned due to three errors defensively by the Lancers.

Grace struck first in the second game on Tuesday with three runs in the top of the first, but the Lancers were unable to stop Clearwater Christian from scoring early as well. Jacob Bloom blasted a two-run home run in the first inning, but Clearwater ripped off eight runs over the first four innings to stake a commanding 8-3 advantage.

Grace exploded with eight runs in the fifth inning to reclaim the lead. Consecutive singles from Aaron Christenberry, Wyatt Clemens and Bloom jumpstarted Grace's momentum as the visiting team looked poised to run away with the victory.

The Lancers' lead was cut to one run when Clearwater Christian tacked on two in the sixth, but Grace quickly doubled that margin with an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Swartz led off the inning with a single, and after being moved to third base on the next two at-bats, Joey Hickerson singled Swartz in to score with two outs.

Clearwater, trailing by two runs, was down to its final out before a hit batsman, a walk and a single loaded the bases. David Edwards then cleared the bases with a walk-off triple to end the game, 13-12.

Swartz finished 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored, and Christenberry drove in three runs on 2-of-4 batting. Hickerson, Clemens, Bloom and Lemler notched two hits apiece, and Bloom had two RBIs as well.
