MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Grace's baseball team picked up a valuable late-season victory on the road against Bethel College on Tuesday.
The Lancers (10-25; 9-18 Crossroads League) recovered from a first-game defeat to produce a 7-6 victory in the second game.
The Pilots (11-30; 9-19 CL) were dominant in the first game, taking a 25-2 victory. Bethel notched 18 hits, including four extra-base hits in the win.
Grace actually scored first with two runs in the top of the first, driven in by Aaron Christenberry and Brook Vosler. But Bethel scored in every inning, including a 12-run fourth, to run away with the win. Christenberry led Grace's offense with a 2-for-3 performance.
In the second game, Grace rallied from a 5-1 deficit to win by one. Joey Hickerson, who earned the complete-game victory on the mound, also scored Grace's second run in the fifth inning.
The Lancers then edged ahead by a run with a four-run sixth inning. Tyler Weber, Christenberry, and Hickerson singled. CJ Swartz doubled in Jacob Bloom, and Frank Rocchio brought in two more runs with a two-out single to left field to put the Lancers on top, 6-5.
Grace added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, which proved to be crucial. Weber hit a sacrifice fly ball to bring in Sammy Wilkerson for Grace's seventh run.
Bethel threatened to steal the game in its final at-bats, scoring one run to make the score 7-6. But with the bases loaded, Hickerson secured the win on the mound by getting the final batter to ground into a fielder's choice.
Swartz finished 2-for-2 in the game, Jared Lemler was 2-for-3, and Steven Hovermale and Weber were 2-for-4.
Grace will face Bethel again on Thursday at Miller Field, starting at 2 p.m. The Lancers will also host Huntington on Saturday in their final regular-season home doubleheader.
