ELGIN, Ill. – Playing their third match in five days, Grace's women's soccer team picked up a 1-1 double overtime draw with Judson on Tuesday.
The Lady Lancers (1-1-2) found themselves behind 1-0 at halftime before rallying to tie the game 10 minutes into the second half.
Grace's offense was stifled to just one shot before halftime. Carianne Sobey took the team's only shot as Grace was called offside twice. Judson converted their second shot of the match into a goal in the 12th minute of play.
The Lady Lancers charged out of halftime as the aggressor, firing off four shots in the early minutes. Grace leveled the score in the 55th minute off the foot of Meghan Wiles, assisted by Carianne Sobey.
Grace ratcheted up its attack in the final stages of regulation time, attempting six shots in the final 10 minutes and two in the final minute alone. But the Eagles' defense held stout to send the match into extra time.
The overtime periods saw two shots combined as neither team found the golden-goal winner.
"The women played reasonably well today. This was by far the most physical match of the year. We were dominant in possession, stood firm tactically, were very dangerous and are getting deeper in our squad with unity," said Grace head coach Michael Voss. "We've achieved an objective in playing three difficult matches in five days, and our level of play did not drop. There is still so much more to this team. It's exciting."
The match was a physical affair, racking up 26 fouls (16 on Judson) and a yellow card on the Eagles.
Grace held an 11-8 shot advantage in the match, including 10-3 after the first half. Mallory Rondeau led Grace with three shots and two shots on goal, and Meghan Wiles, Holly Bennett and Mimi Lozano each tallied two shots.
The Lady Lancers' next match is a neutral-field contest on Friday. Grace will travel to Indiana Wesleyan to play Georgetown at 5 p.m.
