MADISONVILLE, Tenn. – Grace College's baseball team opened up their season with a three-game sweep this weekend against Hiwassee College in Tennessee.
The Lancers (3-0) won 6-2 in the season's first game on Friday, going on to take two more from Hiwassee 2-0 and 10-4 on Saturday.
In the first game, the Lancers were flawless defensively, committing zero errors in the field. Grace stole the momentum early as Logan Grigsby hit a bases-clearing single to take a 6-2 lead. Freshman Kyle Brunner made an impressive debut in relief for the Lancers, throwing two scoreless innings en route to the squad's first victory.
Game two was a pitching duel as the Lancer bullpen was steady throughout the contest. Grace pushed two runs across the plate early in game which proved to be enough in the 2-0 win. Joe Dougherty, Wesley Gensch, Tim Weber and Jason Stevens threw a combined one-hit shutout, leaving the host team off-balance going into the final game.
In the final game, the bats came alive for the Lancers. Grace finished off the weekend with a convincing 10-4 victory. Jason Stevens made his third strong relief appearance of the series, continuing to puzzle the Tigers' lineup.
A total of 10 Lancer pitchers threw as Grace outscored the Hiwassee Tigers 18-6 in the three-game series.
The Lancers seek to continue their winning streak next weekend with another three-game series against NCAA Div. II Oakland City in Nashville, Tenn.
