LIMA, Ohio – The Grace College baseball team could not keep pace with Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, dropping a doubleheader 9-0 and 9-1.
The Lancers (6-7) were held to four hits in the first game and five in the second thanks to sharp pitching from the Racers (13-5).
In the opening game, UNOH plated two runs in the bottom of the first to gain early momentum. The Racers added three more runs in the third and sixth innings while Grace was unable to muster much with the bat.
Grace did not get its first hit until the fourth inning with a single by Frank Rocchio. CJ Swartz led off the fifth with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt. But the next two batters grounded out to strand Swartz in scoring position.
Brook Vosler and Aaron Christenberry put together back-to-back singles in the sixth inning with one out, but the Lancers again wasted a chance to score with two straight fly outs.
In the second game, the Racers did all of their damage early in the contest. UNOH ripped off seven runs in the bottom of the first, producing seven hits with six singles and a triple. The Racers added two more runs in the third inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
Swartz plated the only run of the day for Grace in the sixth inning. After leading off the inning with a single, Swartz moved to second on a ground out. Paul Blankley then produced a two-out double to deep left field to score Swartz and record Grace's only RBI of the twin bill.
Cody Young was a bright spot offensively for Grace in the second game, batting 2-of-3 with a double as the designated hitter. Logan Grigsby pitched a scoreless inning of relief, and Kyle Brunner allowed two runs in 4.2 innings from the mound.
If favorable weather conditions allow, the Lancers are scheduled to play their home opener on Tuesday against Trinity Christian at 1 p.m.Â
