Lancers down Maple Leafs in league opener

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's baseball team impressed in the Crossroads League season opener on Thursday, sweeping Goshen College 9-3 and 13-0 at Miller Field.

The Lancers erupted for 24 hits in the twin bill, and sharp pitching from Aaron Christenberry and CJ Swartz produced a pair of complete games.

Grace's bats needed four innings to come to life in the opener. Goshen had taken a 2-0 lead as Grace took its at-bats in the bottom of the fourth.

The Lancers tied the game in the fourth with runs from Logan Grigsby and Quentin Herbster. Grace then tacked on two more runs in the fifth off the bats of Herbster and Frank Rocchio.

Grace broke the game wide open with a five-run outburst in the sixth inning. Matt Morgart, Brook Vosler and Aaron Christenberry led off the inning with three straight singles, and CJ Swartz followed that up with a double. Paul Blankley drove in the fifth run of the inning with a two-out single.

Christenberry tossed a six-hitter from the mound, holding Goshen to one walk with four strikeouts in seven innings. He was also 2-for-4 from the plate.

Grigsby scored three runs as a pinch runner, and Swartz and Herbster plated twice.

In the second game, Grace held a commanding 7-0 lead after just two innings. Swartz took care of the rest with a four-hit shutout of the Maple Leafs. The junior tossed the best game of his career, striking out five batters in a memorable performance.

Grace scored seven runs in the second inning as the Lancers pounded out eight hits, including two in the inning from Rocchio.

The Lancers went on to add six additional runs over the next three innings as Grace cruised to a 13-0 victory.

Christenberry finished 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs, and Herbster was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Rocchio, Morgart and Swartz notched two hits apiece, and Grigsby scored three more runs as a pinch runner.

The Lancers play a return series at Goshen on Saturday with the doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m.
