Game Recap: Baseball |

Marian wins twice over Lancers

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's baseball team could not find the answer to Marian on Saturday.

The Lancers (12-21, 5-13 Crossroads League) were swept 9-3 and 8-2 at Miller Field.

Similar to Friday's games against Marian, the Lancers' defensive miscues gave Marian a major boost in the opener. Six of the Knights' nine runs were unearned.

Starting pitcher Tim Weber held the Knights (10-13, 9-9 CL) scoreless through the first three innings and looked to be out of the fourth inning. But a two-out error kept Marian's inning alive, and the Knights made Grace pay by plating four runs after the error.

Grace battled back with two extra-base hits in the bottom of the fourth. Frank Rocchio doubled to lead off the inning, and Austin Green belted a two-run home run over the right field fence to cut Marian's lead in half.

The Lancers made the score 4-3 with another run in the fifth. With two outs in the inning, Rocchio notched his second double to bring in Logan Grigsby.

But the Knights responded with two more unearned runs in the sixth, capitalizing on another two-out fielding error. Marian effectively ended the game with three runs on four hits in the seventh for the final 9-3 margin of victory.

Rocchio was 3-for-4 with three doubles, and Green was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

In the second game, Grace's bats were slow to jump to life. Grace scored its only two runs in the seventh inning in the 8-2 defeat.

Marian manufactured a run in the top of the first inning, and the game remained 1-0 through the first three innings. Grace had runners on second and third in the bottom of the first but came up empty.

The Knights found an offensive rhythm starting in the fourth inning, rattling off at least one run in each of the final four innings. The Lancers, meanwhile, could not capitalize with a runner on second base in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Grace trailed 8-0 heading into the final frame, and the Lancers promptly loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. A ground ball from Paul Blankley allowed Colton Ferrand to score, and a single from Rocchio brought in Chase Baker. But Grace's momentum ran out as the side was retired with a strikeout.

Vosler led Grace from the leadoff position, batting 2-for-4. Blankley and Green both doubled.

The Lancers face a pair of road doubleheaders next week. Grace will play at Spring Arbor for a four-game series on Friday and Saturday. The Lancers' final home games are on April 23 against Taylor.
