SYLVANIA, Ohio – Grace's baseball team could not get the better of Lourdes in Tuesday's doubleheader on the road.
The Lancers (13-26) came up short in a last-inning rally to lose 7-6 in the opener. The second game was a defensive clash with the Gray Wolves (11-30) winning 2-0.
In the first game, Grace's offense had little trouble scoring against Lourdes with four runs over the first four innings. Defensively, however, Grace had its hands full as Lourdes managed to score even more.
Lourdes had one run in the first inning to cancel out Brook Vosler's RBI single in the top of the first. The Gray Wolves added two more runs in the second, third and fourth innings to pull ahead 7-4.
Austin Green doubled in Paul Blankley in the third inning. Blankley returned the favor with a two-out double in the fourth, bringing in Quentin Herbster and Colton Ferrand.
The score remained 7-4 until Grace's final at-bats in the top of the seventh. Green had his second double of the game to spark Grace's rally, and Matt Morgart singled on the next at-bat. Jared Lemler lofted a sac fly to center field to score Green, and Ferrand drove in another run with a two-out single to trim Lourdes' lead to one. But the Gray Wolves survived, getting the final batter to ground out for the 7-6 win.
Austin Sartori and Austin Baker each pitched scoreless outings in relief for Grace. Blankley was a sizzling 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs from the leadoff position, and Ferrand was 2-for-3. Vosler, Green and Herbster each batted 2-for-4.
For the game, Grace outhit Lourdes 13-7. The Gray Wolves also had seven walks and three hit batsmen.
The second half of the twinbill was a pitchers' duel. Freshman Kyle Brunner got the start and tossed four strong innings from the mound, giving up just two runs in the second inning and three hits overall. Brunner struck out four in four innings.
Lourdes's two second-inning runs proved to be enough as the Lancers were unable to get on the scoreboard. Grace had runners in scoring position in the second, third and sixth innings to no avail. Herbster tripled in the second inning and Blankley tripled in the sixth, but each time Grace was unable to produce the game-changing swing. Overall Grace stranded six runners on base.
Logan Grigsby was 1-for-2 with a bunt single, and Wesley Gensch tossed two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts.
The Lancers will play their final regular-season home games of the season on Thursday with a doubleheader against Taylor at 2 p.m. Grace will end the week at Huntington on Saturday.
