WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's baseball team could not slow down Taylor's offense in a doubleheader loss at Miller Field on Thursday.
The Trojans (28-17, 15-9 Crossroads League) won 17-0 and 6-3 to close out Grace's home portion of the regular season.
Taylor's bats were the story of the opening game. The Trojans scored multiple runs in every inning but two in a 17-0 win.
Grace had more than its share of baserunners in the game. The Lancers (13-28, 6-18 CL) notched seven hits, but the hosts stranded 10 baserunners overall and were unable to keep pace with Taylor.
The Lancers had bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings, but each time Grace kept up empty. Grace had also two runners on base in the second and seventh innings, but the Lancers were unable to break onto the scoreboard.
Frank Rocchio was 2-for-4 to lead Grace offensively in the opener.
Taylor jumped out to another early lead against Grace in the second game. The Trojans led 4-0 after the midway point of the fourth inning, but the Lancers still had some fight left.
Noah Follett scampered home from third base to give Grace its first run of the day in the bottom of the fourth. Grace added two more in the fifth to cut Taylor's lead to 4-3. Paul Blankley's sac fly brought in Colton Ferrand for the first run of the inning, and Logan Grigsby plated from third base to pull Grace within one.
Taylor found some breathing room in the sixth with two runs, and Grace was unable to counter. The Lancers threatened in their final at-bats and had the winning run at the plate. But with two runners on base and one out, Grace was retired for the day with a double play on a ground ball to the pitcher.
CJ Swartz tossed the first six innings from the mound, and Jason Stevens pitched the final clean inning of relief.
Brook Vosler batted 2-for-4 with two stolen bases for Grace. Ferrand was 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Grigsby was also 1-for-2 with a run and two steals.
Grace will reap up the regular season with a pair of doubleheaders on the road. Grace will play at Huntington on Saturday and at St. Francis on Tuesday before turning its attention to the postseason.
