Game Recap: Baseball |

Grace drops pair of defensive battles

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Two low-scoring games ended in defeat for Grace's baseball team on Monday.

The Lancers (13-30, 6-20 Crossroads League) had more hits than Huntington in each game but still fell 5-3 and 3-0 against Huntington.

In the opening game, Grace outhit the Foresters (23-12, 18-6 CL), but Huntington made its hits count. The Foresters notched two runs in the second and third innings to jump on top 4-0.

Grace eventually hopped on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. After Grace had its first two batters retired, the Lancers strung together five straight hits to score three runs. Quentin Herbster brought in one run with a double, and Austin Baker's single plated two more.

The Foresters picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 5-3. Grace's potential seventh-inning rally was snuffed out with a double play.

CJ Swartz pitched the complete game, giving up eight hits and five runs with three strikeouts. Austin Green batted 2-for-3 with a run, and Herbster was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Matt Morgart hit 1-for-2 as a pinch hitter, and Frank Rocchio was 1-for-3 with a run.

Grace was shut out in the second game despite outhitting Huntington 5-4. The Foresters scored the only three runs of the game in the fifth inning, plating all three with two outs.

The Lancers had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, but the next two batters were retired with a fly out and a ground out. Grace had a baserunner in scoring position in the first, third and fifth innings as well, but each time the Foresters came up with a stop.

The pitching staff of Jason Stevens, Tim Weber, Kyle Brunner and Wesley Gensch combined to hold Huntington to just four hits in the game.

Offensively, five different players for Grace had a hit, including Paul Blankley's double. Herbster reached base twice with a hit and a walk.

The Lancers will conclude the season on Tuesday with a doubleheader at St. Francis. Grace did not qualify for the Crossroads League Tournament or NCCAA Regional play.
