Grace welcomes Dodger legend Carl Erskine for MLK Luncheon

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Brooklyn Dodgers legend Carl Erskine spoke at Grace College on Monday as part of of the Committee to Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Erskine was the featured guest speaker on Monday. He was a teammate and friend of Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Together they shared an enduring friendship that would teach lessons of patience, fortitude and doing the right thing.

Erskine shared an intimate portrait of baseball, friendship and one man's fight to change the world as he witnessed his teammate's crusade for racial equality.

Erskine shared a moment with Grace's baseball and softball teams after the luncheon as well, posing for photos and sharing words of encouragement.

Erskine played with the Dodgers from 1948-59. He helped the team win five NL pennants. In 1953, he won 20 games and set a World Series record with 14 strikeouts in one game. He tossed two no-hitters in the 1950s.
