MARION, Ind. - Grace College's baseball team had a tough day at Crossroads League foe Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday..
The Lancers (10-13-1, 2-4 CL) wrapped up the three-game league series in the first game of the day. The second game was nonleague action.
The Wildcats' offense exploded in both games, and they never gave Grace a chance to recover. The Lancers lost both games of day two's doubleheader after splitting with IWU (18-13, 4-1 CL) less than 24 hours ago.
IWU wasted little time getting its offense rolling in game one. The Wildcats quickly took a 3-0 lead in the first inning off a double by Brady West. Grace answered immediately with three runs of their own. With the bases loaded, Jamar Bray hit a bases-clearing double off the wall to tie the game 3-3.
The Wildcats took control from the second inning on. Five runs scored in the second inning, including a grand slam. The game would be put out of reach in the third inning when IWU scored nine runs; the inning featured their second grand slam of the day and two more home runs to increase their lead to 17-3.
Gavin Bussard drove in one run for the Lancers in the fourth, but IWU showed no mercy. The Wildcats added four runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and five more in the seventh. Another RBI by Bussard gave Grace another run in the sixth, as the Lancers dropped game one 27-5.
Bussard and Bray were the lone bright spots for Grace in game one. Bussard went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, as Bray added 3 RBIs of his own.
The Lancers started game two with an aggressive approach at the plate. A double by Austin Baker, a fielder's choice by Bray, and a single by Jason Stevens gave Grace a 3-0 lead to start the game.
Grace held their lead until the Wildcats scored six runs in the third. Walks and wild pitches set up a three-run homer for Tanner Killian. IWU increased their lead in the fourth courtesy of another home run.
The Lancers' bats cooled off, as they struggle to mount any sort of comeback. The Wildcats continued to show off their power as they hit two more home runs in the fifth.
Going into the seventh inning, Grace was down to its last chance trailing 12-3. Cam Maxwell's single to left field scored a run, but the Lancers lost game two 12-4.
Xavier Harris went 2 for 4 in game two for Grace. Maxwell, Baker, Bray and Stevens each had an RBI. IWU totaled 10 home runs combined in both games.
The Lancers will look to rebound on Monday when they travel to face their archrival Bethel. The first pitch against the Pilots takes place at 1 p.m.
