Box Score 3 WESTFIELD, Ind. - Grace's baseball team played three games over the weekend, winning once.
The Lancers split two games with Lawrence Tech and lost to St. Xavier. The weekend series was played at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
Friday morning's opener was canceled due to cold temperatures, but the weather warmed enough in the afternoon to play against Lawrence Tech.
The Lancers routed the Blue Devils 9-1 for Grace's first victory of the season.
Houston Haney impressed on the mound, pitching a complete game. He limited Lawrence Tech to three hits and one run with four strikeouts and zero walks.
Grace got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double from Ethan Brooks.
In the fifth inning, Grace tacked on four more runs. Three of those runs were scored by freshmen, including Patrick Danforth, Grant Buschman and Alex Rich. David Anderson and Sam Newkirk both drove in runs with a single during the frame.
The Lancers kept the pressure on the Blue Devils, plating two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings. Chris Griffin produced an RBI triple, and Rich drove in his second run of the day during the sixth.
Haney took care of the rest, yielding just one run in the bottom of the sixth.
Griffin was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, and Danforth hit 3-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base. Rich tallied two hits and two RBIs, Newkirk had 2 runs, 1 RBI and 1 steal, and Brooks drove in a pair of runs.
On Saturday, Grace struggled to slow down the opposition. Lawrence Tech got revenge in the morning game with a 12-0 victory, and St. Xavier won the second game 12-6.
Jeff Pawlik batted 1 for 1 with two walks against the Blue Devils.
Against the Cougars, Griffin batted 2 for 4 with 1 homer, 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Newkirk also hit a solo home run, and Haney and Xavier Harris each doubled.
The Lancers will travel south after finals week, playing their spring break trip in Florida. Grace will have eight games starting Feb. 28.
