Three podium visits highlight opening day of NCCAA Nationals

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Three trips to the podium highlighted the first day of the 2023 NCCAA Indoor Track and Field National Champions for Grace College on Friday.

The Lancers earned All-American honors (top-three finishes) in three events on the opening day.

After the first day, the women's team sits in second place in the team standings, and the men are in fourth.

The women's distance medley relay took home gold. The squad of Anna Hulstedt, Olivia Adkins, Heather Plastow and Kylie Sauder crossed the tape with an NAIA "A" time of 12:22.42.

Grace's women had three top-eight finishes in the 5,000. Carmen Trier grabbed silver when she clocked 18:12.52, Mallory Hiatt was sixth (18:27.94) and Katie Acker placed eighth (18:51.79).

Trier's time was an NAIA "A" performance, and Hiatt hit the NAIA "B" standard.

The men had two top-four finishes in the 5,000. Brandon Kleber earned second place at 15:37.18, and Justin Van Prooyen was just behind in fourth place (15:37.69).

The men's DMR squad (Brady Hunsberger, Michael Williams, Carter Clear, Carson Martin) grabbed fifth place at 10:52.05, and the men's 4x200 (Ethan Cummins, Kye Barrett, Adam Collard, Williams) finished seventh at 1:36.96.

In the men's weight throw, Brock Lengacher hit 47-feet-11 to earn sixth place.

The women's high jump saw three members garner points for Grace. Emily McCreary and Claire Horvath tied for fifth place, clearing 4-9.75 on their first try. Makayla Neal cleared that mark on her second attempt, earning seventh place in the field.

Neal will also race in the finals of the 60 hurdles on Saturday after making the top eight during Friday's qualifying heats.

In the women's pole vault, Emma Lehman vaulted 9-3 to claim sixth place.

Saturday will see national champions awarded in eight more field events and 18 track events, in addition to the pentathlon and heptathlon. The field events will start at 10:15 a.m. with the running events starting at 12:15 p.m.
