WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's track and field team divided and conquered over the weekend at two separate meets.
A portion of the team competed at Tiffin's Track Carnival with the remainder of the squad at Ball State's We Fly Challenge.
Grace's distance squad set three school records at Tiffin.
Bryan Hernandez-Rios won the 1,500-meter race with a school-record time of 3:48.42. It's the third-fastest time currently in the NAIA and broke a 24-year-old record set by James Kennedy (1999).
Dimitri Margaritidis also impressed in the race with an NAIA "A" time of 3:52.93.
The Lancers erupted in the 800-meter races. Tanner Sallee set another school record in the men's race when he ran 1:51.46; it was an NAIA "A" standard and good for sixth in the NAIA.
In the women's 800, Kylie Sauder hit the "A" standard with another school-record time of 2:11.81; her mark ranks fourth in the nation. Anna Hulstedt hit the "B" standard in the race with a PR of 2:15.60.
Mallory Hiatt also hit the NAIA "B" standard in the 10,000. She won the race in 37:35.24.
Brandon Kleber ran a sub-15:00 race in the 5,000 (14:57.39), placing third in the process.
The Ball State meet featured several NCAA Div. I schools along with six Crossroads League schools.
Luke Smith (1:57.82), Carson Martin (2:00.22) and Cole Johnston (2:02.03) all placed in the top 10 at Ball State's 800-meter race. Morgan Welch grabbed 10th in the women's race (2:22.90).
Brady Hunsberger won the 1,500 (4:01.80) with Smith (4:02.48), Dakota Ames (4:04.63) and Johnston (4:06.89) close behind.
Luke Nier was runner-up in the steeplechase when he finished the grueling race in 10:41.64.
The men's 4x400 team of Smith, Hunsberger, Martin and Carter Clear grabbed fourth place (3:35.20), and Noah Zimmerman was also fourth in the long jump (21-feet-7.5).
Zaryn Rumfelt finished sixth in the javelin (54-9) and sixth in the shot put (49-0.75), and Brock Lengacher was eighth in the discus (134-3).
Heather Plastow raced to a third-place finish in the 1,500 (4:41.84), and Addison Grady (4:58.09) and Esther Cameron (4:59.21) finished 10th and 12th respectively.
Emma Lehman finished runner-up in the pole vault when she cleared 10 feet, and Mackenzie DeLong was sixth in the discus (131-8).
The Lancers will compete together at the Little State Championships in Marion, Ind., next week on Friday and Saturday.
Grace will then host its annual Lancer Invitational on April 28 at the Key Track and Field Complex before diving into postseason competition.
