Lancers host rain-filled Lancer Invitational

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's track and field team hosted its annual Lancer Invitational on Friday at the Bernard and Linnie Key Track and Field Complex.

The sixth annual invitational was filled with a steady rain for the duration of the meet, creating challenging conditions for the student-athletes.

But the Lancers pushed through the elements to win several events against conference opponents.

The women's 4x100 relay began the running events as the sole team competing, finishing with a time of 51.03 (Madelyn Yoder, Olivia Adkins, Zoey Huley, Malia Butler). Butler also won the long jump when she cleared 15-feet-7.

In the women's 1,500, the Lady Lancers had five runners in the top eight, including Tara Friesen (4:56.41), Carmen Trier (5:03.54), Mallory Hiatt (5:05.65), Esther Cameron (5:10.16) and Katie Acker (5:13.22).

The men's 1,500 was even better with six of the top-seven finishers. Korry Hamlin won the race in 4:01.49, followed by Cole Johnston (4:06.46), Brady Hunsberger (4:06.86), Luke Nier (4:09.22), Carson Martin (4:10.41) and Carter Clear (4:12.06).

Heather Plastow won the 800 race in 2:18.96, and Morgan Welch was sixth (2:23.86). In the men's 800, Dimitri Margaritidis (1:58.15) and Luke Smith (1:58.92) finished second and third, and Korry Hamlin (1:59.66), Maurice Macklin (1:59.92) and Bryan Hernandez-Rios (2:00.58) were not far behind.

Makayla Neal (16.50) and Yoder (16.55) finished second and third in the 100 hurdles, Anna Hulstedt was runner-up in the 400 (1:01.79), and Karris Sigler was runner-up in the 400 hurdles (1:13.62).

Ethan Cummins won the 100 dash, breaking the tape in a time of 11.27. He was also runner-up in the 200 (22.84); Matthew Helton was fourth in the 200 (24.16).

Madelyn Skidmore won the women's 5,000 (19:10.14) with Grace Geller in second (20:19.13); Jose Quinones (16:21.89) and Caden Ringer (16:39.52) led Grace's performance in the men's 5,000.

Grace won both the men's and women's 4x400 relays. The women's quartet of Plastow, Kylie Sauder, Friesen and Adkins finished in 4:07.07, and the men's group of Hernandez-Rios, Margaritidis, Tanner Sallee and Smith ended in 3:26.06.

Emily McCreary claimed the high jump title when she cleared 5-1, and Josh Pike was second in the long jump (20-2.5).

McKenzie DeLong grabbed second place in the shot put (38-2.75) and third place in the discus (115-10). Lanae Crowe was second in the discus (127-4) and ninth in the shot put (33-8.75).

Bryce Willard won the discus with his toss of 137-2, and Zaryn Rumfelt was runner-up at 136-2.

In the javelin, Ethan Brown (140-8), Josiah Thompson (137-4) and Clayton Martin (132-3) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The Lancers will begin postseason competition next week. The 2023 Crossroads League Championships will be hosted by Marian on May 4-5.
