Lancers slip in opening round of league tourney

Box Score

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's men's soccer team fell apart in the second half, yielding five goals to Taylor in a 5-0 defeat in the first round of the Crossroads League Tournament on Saturday.

The Lancers (11-5-2) had home-field advantage as the No. 3 seed, but Taylor's strong second half allowed the Trojans (10-8-1) to upset Grace.

The quarterfinal match was competitively even in the first half as both squads tallied six shots apiece.

Grace's two best opportunities to score came late in the opening half. Steven Fiema, the CL Offensive Player of the Year, fired a low driven shot across the face of the goal from the left side of the field, but his attempt was just wide of the goalpost.

Gift Sibukome nearly scored as well when he lofted a shot to the far, upper-right corner of the goal, but his shot glanced off the crossbar.

The Trojans came out firing in the second half and scored off a cross less than a minute into the period.

Before 16 minutes had expired in the second half, Taylor was ahead by three goals. Grace lost a key member of its defense when Justin Festa had to be replaced due to injury which helped pave the way for a flood of goals from the Trojans.

Despite losing by five goals, Grace was only outshot 17-14 in the match. The Lancers could only direct two of their 14 shots on frame, however, as both shots on goal were credited to Sibukome.

Taylor also held a slight 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Grace will shift their focus next to the NCCAA National Championships as they hope to earn their second straight trip to Kissimmee, Fla. In order to do that, they must win their way through regional play which has yet to be scheduled.
