WINONA LAKE, Ind. – For the fifth straight game, Grace's men's soccer team recorded more shots than its opponent. But for the fourth time in the past five games, the Lancers came up short in a 2-1 defeat to St. Francis.
The Lancers (6-7-1; 2-5-1 Crossroads League) tallied 20 shots and nine shots on goal, but a first-half goal from Kyle Hamlin was not enough on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars (12-4-1; 6-2 CL) scored twice in the final 20 minutes to complete their comeback.
An evenly played first half saw scoring chances for both squads. Grace struck first in the 23rd minute when Hamlin netted his seventh goal of the season. Hamlin got juked by a defender at the top of the penalty box and unleashed a curling left-footed shot that curled inside the left goalpost.
St. Francis had a header ricochet off the goalpost, but Grace neutralized the Cougars' offense mostly. For the half, Grace had an 8-5 advantage in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks.
The second half saw in increase in both physicality and offensive opportunities. The Lancers recorded four shots in the first seven minutes of the half, but they were unable to double their advantage.
St. Francis found the equalizing goal in the 72nd minute. The Cougars went on to shock the Miller Field crowd with the game-winning goal at the 83:40 mark.
The final frantic six minutes of regulation were fruitless for the Lancers. Jon Christensen nearly tied the match in the closing seconds, but his hard shot inside the right edge of the box was saved.
Overall Grace had 20 shots as a team, led by Hamlin's six shots and Christensen's three shots. The Lancers had 20 shots compared to 16 for the Cougars, and Grace took five of the six corner kicks in the game.
The Lancers will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Mt. Vernon Nazarene at 2 p.m.
