Box Score MUSKOGEE, Okla. - A chippy match resulted in Grace's first loss of the season 2-1 at Bacone on Saturday.
The Lancers (4-1-2) fell behind early to Bacone and couldn't make up the gap by the final whistle.
Bacone scored both of its goals in the first half. Grace's backline made a few critical errors which the Warriors (3-2) converted. Bacone scored in first 15 minutes of the match and then again just before halftime to take a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Grace cut Bacone's lead in half when Dominic Harris scored his second goal of the season. Jon Christensen was fouled in a dangerous position. On the ensuing free kick from Josiah Osborn, Harris latched onto the ball and blasted in his close-range shot just below the crossbar.
Minutes later Osborn looked to equalize the score, but his shot was deflected wide.
The match's intensity ratcheted up after Harris's goal. A Bacone player was issued a straight red card for pushing a Lancer to the ground. Ten minutes later, a second Warrior was given a straight red card for a dangerous tackle attempt.
Grace's attack went into full force in pursuit of a second goal. A penalty appeal was denied by the official midway through the half. Damon Binkley and Breno Oliveira also teamed up for a strong chance, but a Warriors' defender saved the ball from crossing the goal line.
Binkley had Grace's best chance in the final 10 minutes of the match, but his attempt was saved.
"We took too long to start playing our game. We can find excuses, but all of those sound really poor. I did not have our guys prepared for a very direct and physical matchup," said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. "They outplayed us in the first half and showed more desire to win. I thought we played better in the second half, but we were already down 0-2."
The Lancers will end their nonconference season on Sunday. Grace's match at Harris-Stowe was originally planned for Friday, but rainy conditions forced the game to be moved to Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (Eastern Time).
"We will learn from the match and work to improve things. Everybody seems discouraged, but we needed a matchup like this to prepare us for every type of situation. We also needed the adversity of this long and strenuous road trip to show us our weaknesses," Hotchkin said. "I think the guys will bounce back and work for each other tomorrow."
