WESTFIELD, Ind. — Grace's Baseball team spent the weekend on the turf facilities at Grand Park. The Lancers played games against Concordia and Goshen.

In the first matchup against Concordia, both teams had to deal with harsh weather conditions, including snow. The Cardinals (8-2), who are receiving votes for the NAIA top 25, jumped ahead early thanks to a single and triple from their first two batters. A dropped pop fly increased the lead to 2-0 after the first frame.

Errors proved costly for Grace (0-6) as three defensive mistakes helped Concordia increase its lead to 5-0. The Cardinals continued to pile on in the fifth inning; they tacked on three more runs to take an 8-0 lead.

Grace was able to get a few runs on the board in the sixth. Xavier Harris started the inning with a double, and Hunter Ackerman followed with an RBI single. Ackerman made his way to third courtesy of a Gabe Douglass single. CJ Trevino's fielder's choice drove in their second run of the contest.

The rally stopped short as Concordia went on to win 8-2. Houston Haney gave up one earned run in four innings pitched with three strikeouts. Jacob Hammel pitched two scoreless innings of relief while striking out two batters. Ackerman had two hits in the contest.

In the second game against Concordia, Grace's offense began to come alive. Austin Baker doubled with the bases loaded to give Grace a 3-0 lead. However, Concordia quickly responded with six runs in its half of the inning.

The Lancers worked hard to slowly claw their way back. A double by Haney made the score 6-4. Grace took advantage of an error by Concordia with the bases loaded to tie the game at six.

The Cardinals quickly took back their lead with a run-scoring double in the fourth. They continued to add insurance runs in the fifth, as a Cardinal home run made the score 10-6.

Concordia added two more runs in the sixth. Grace tried to show some fight in the final frame. An error allowed Ackerman to make his way home to make the score 12-7, but the comeback fell short.

Haney had three hits and an RBI in the contest. Gavin Bussard added two hits of his own to the cause. Ethan Brooks and Jordan Noska both made their collegiate pitching debuts during the game.

In the final contest of the weekend, Grace took on conference foe Goshen (2-2) in a non-league matchup. Grace grabbed an early advantage in the first inning thanks to Baker and Haney. Baker started the game with a triple, and Haney drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

The Maple Leafs quickly responded with a rally of their own. They plated three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. A solo home run in the second and a double in the third made the score 5-1.

Grace's offense could not find a gap in the Goshen defense with seemingly every batted ball being hit right at a Maple Leaf fielder.

Douglass drove in Grace's second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to cut the Goshen lead to 5-2. Goshen put the game out of reach in the sixth as it added three insurance runs to its lead.

Grace tried to mount a comeback attempt, but it was too little too late. Trevino had an RBI double in the seventh, but the Lancers could not overcome the deficit. Goshen came out on top 8-3.

Trevino finished with two hits and an RBI in the game. Baker, and Bussard followed with hits of their own.

The Lancers will face Pikeville when they travel to Kentucky next weekend. The first game takes place Friday at 12 p.m.
