Box Score 2 KOKOMO, Ind. - Grace's baseball team was unable to push across a run on Tuesday with a road doubleheader at IU Kokomo.
Grace was within striking distance of the Cougars (23-7) in each game, but the Lancers could not take down the hosts. IU Kokomo currently sits atop the River States Conference.
The Lancers (7-11) lost 3-0 and 5-0 on the road.
In the opener, Houston Haney tossed a gem to keep Grace close. Haney yielded seven hits and three runs in a complete game, striking out five.
But Grace's offense was mainly muted in the game. The Lancers were held to four hits in the loss.
The fourth inning was Grace's best shot. Xavier Harris doubled to left field, and Chris Griffin walked. But Grace was retired with a strikeout.
In the second game, Grace actually outhit the Cougars 4-3. But Grace committed three errors to lose 5-0.
Logan Swartzentruber, Jacob Hammel and Ike Peterson combined to throw the five-hitter from the mound. Swartzentruber tossed the first 4.1 innings, and Peterson threw a clean final inning.
All five runs for the Cougars were scored in the fifth inning. Grace's defense faltered in the frame, giving up multiple errors, passed balls and a wild pitch to let the Cougars grab control of the game.
The Lancers threatened to rally in the top of the seventh. Harris walked and reached third with a stolen base and a single from Sam Newkirk. But with two runners in scoring position, the game ended with a groundout.
The Lancers are set to play at home this week for the first time all season. Grace is scheduled to host Huntington on Friday at 3 p.m. in a single 9-inning contest and on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader. If weather is deemed to be an issue, the schedule will be updated online at www.gclancers.com and on twitter.
